«I share one of my most recent works – which honoured me greatly – of being invited by ASIFA International to design the poster for International Animation Day 2020:
In these times of uncertainty and astonishment, this day seems uncertain and distant, maybe no so important in the panorama we live in today…
However, it is our day, it remembers us what we are and what we used to do before all this situation and give us also hope and purpose for what we wish to be able to do “when everything goes back to normal” …
My concept creating this image is:
1- the character in the image is making shadow puppets with his right hand. The source of light is coming from a second hat he holds on his left hand: with this attitude I allude to the Magic of projected images, the core of all Cinema concept. Also, « shadows puppets » became a kind of my « signature’s » personal design…
2:- if you look more carefully, the character himself, dressed up as a kind of Magician is Abi Feijó, the creator of the Internacional Animation Day, when he was ASIFA president between 2000 and 2002 (http://www.fete-cinema-animation.fr/index.php…). So, this is also a tribute to our CASA de Vilar Museum, created also by Abi, a total passionate about animation, pre-cinema and all the mysteries and illusions of the moving image: https://www.facebook.com/casamuseuvilar/videos/1411638745802117/
3 – The shadow puppet he’s projecting is the Number 6, which in my composition makes the number 60, ASIFA’s age this year!
4- the second hat Abi is holding in his left had is a tribute to « Uncle Thomas – accounting for the days », my last film. And, at the same time an allusion to the Mad Hatter from « Alice in wonderland », always rich source of inspiration for me and this is a specific cheerful magical character I love.
Lets, hope we can celebrate this day fully next October…
